Avenue des Champs-Elysées

The world's most beautiful avenue.

Paris | France

Situated between the place de la Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe, the Avenue des Champs Elysées is a place for strolling, sight-seeing and luxury shopping.

Just a few centuries ago this entire area was but marshes and fields, however Le Nôtre's re-designing of the city layout caused a great deal of change in the neighbourhood; the Champs Elysées, a mere field, was named in 1709. It was only in 1724 that the actual avenue was laid by the Duke of Antin. Merely an untended garden until 1828, it would over time become one of the most beautiful areas of the city with fountains and large pavements and gas-lighting. Today the "most famous avenue in the world" hosts many prestigious events including the Bastille Day parade and the finish of the Tour de France.
