The Quai Branly Museum opened its doors in 2006. Its mission statement from the start was to showcase non-western artwork; and to open the eyes of the public. The museum is thus home to more than 3 600 precious artefacts, from Australasia, Asia, Africa and the Americas. These objects mostly came from the collections of the former Museum of Man and the National Museum of African and Australasian Art.
Within the Quai Branly Museum you will find three sections: the musical instruments collection (8 831 items); the History collection (4 987 items linked to history and French colonialism); and the textile collection (25 000 items).
Jean Nouvel's extraordinary architectural design offers visitors a very contemporary setting for their cultural exploration, a modern touch that contrasts with the items on display.
The building is literally surrounded by gardens: from traditional to exotic, these gardens can be visited outside the museum, but the most remarkable are the vertical gardens that carpet the exterior walls… Designed by Patrick Blanc, the vertical garden is made up of Chinese, Japanese, American and Central European vegetation.
